Suspect Rams Two Cop Cars Before Three Arrests Made

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-

On Sunday January 27, 2013 at 3:23 p.m., Officers of the Topeka Police Department located two individuals at NE Sardue Ave. and Poplar Street who were known to have felony warrants for their arrest. Ramon Mathews, 20, Topeka was wanted on felony warrant for aggravated robbery. Isaiah P. Myers, 18, Topeka was wanted for felony warrant for his arrest for burglary The officers observed Myers enter a business and Mathews remained sitting in the driver seat of the Ford Expedition they arrived in.

The officers attempted to box in the Ford Expedition using fully marked police cruisers. Mathews accelerated the Ford Expedition striking a police cruiser occupied by a police officer and a police canine; neither were injured.

Mathews continued to accelerate the Ford Expedition striking a second police cruiser occupied by a police Sergeant and his Canine. The push bumper of that police cruiser became married to the running board on the Ford Expedition locking the two vehicles together. Mathews continued to accelerate the Ford Expedition dragging the police cruiser and its occupants out of the parking lot of the business onto NE Sardue Ave and into a yard on the North side of the street.

When Mathews could not escape with the vehicle, he fled on foot and the Police Sergeant and his dog, Tyce, were able to apprehend Mathews nearby. Myers was taken into custody inside the business without incident.

A 22 year old female was also arrested at the scene and released after being interviewed by detectives. The police Sergeant sought medical treatment for a minor non-life threatening injury. No other injuries were reported.

The first police cruiser remained drivable but the second had to be towed for repairs. The Ford Expedition had a stolen license plate reported out of Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. The Vehicle was found to be an unreported stolen vehicle through Topeka Police Department.

Ramon Mathews Charged; Aggravated Battery LEO X 2, Possession Stolen Property, Felony Obstruction, Cruelty to Animals X 2, Driver’s license Required, Reckless driving, Possession of Stolen Vehicle, Felony Criminal Damage to Property, City of Topeka warrant and Shawnee County Felony warrant. TPD case number 1969-13

Isaiah P. Myers charged; Felony obstruction and Shawnee County felony warrant TPD case number 1969-13. Also charged Felony obstruction, Felony Flee and Elude, Reckless Driving, Failure to Maintain Signal Lane, Failure to Yield Emergency Vehicle, Stop Sign Violation X 2, Speeding, Improper Right Turn and DL Required TPD case number 1869-13. This was a result of an active ATL for MR. Myers from incident that occurred on January 25, 2013.

Investigation continues, police ask anyone with information to call detectives at 368-9400 or remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 234-0007.
