TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - More than 100 victims of violent crime will be awarded compensation.
The Kansas Crime Victims Compensation Board made the decisions at its November meeting. Awards were made in 54 new cases, with additional expenses paid in 57 previously-submitted cases.
The awards totaled $272,552.
The Kansas Crime Victims Compensation program was established in 1978 to help victims of violent crime pay for unexpected expenses. Those items might include medical treatment, mental health counseling, lost wages, dependent support and funeral expenses.
A three-member board determines which claims are eligible for payment and how much money would be awarded. The program is funded through court costs and fines, inmate wages, parole fees and restitution paid by offenders.
