COUNCIL GROVE, Kan. (WIBW)-Smoke was still rising from a Council Grove home after it was struck by lightning last night.
Jim and Marsha Autery were inside sleeping when they heard, "a really big 'kaboom' and fortunately we had someone staying with us a guest and came downstairs saying they smelled smoke," says Jim Autery, homeowner.
"She had heard the great big clap of thunder and lightening hit the house and we're thankful she was there," said Marsha Autery, homeowner.
The couple and their guest ran from the house before fire crews arrived. The second story was destroyed, 4 bedrooms gone and possessions scattered.
"I don't think we will be able to keep anything from this house," said Marsha Autery, "that's a church member-they came to our rescue, doing a marvelous job helping us."
"I pitched in and helped them and a whole bunch of people and and they're good people we need to help them out," said family friend, Don Johnson.
Jim and Marsha continue to sort through their items all in disarray and Jim says they are thankful to be alive.
"They're things! People weren't hurt, dog wasn't hurt, things can be replaced. People can't," says Jim Autery.
The family will be waiting for an insurance adjuster to let them know how much of the damage is covered and what it will cost to make their home liveable again.
