County Works To Determine Cause Of Trash Truck Fire

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Shawnee County officials are working to determine the exact cause of a fire that broke out in a trash truck Friday.

The driver was on his pick up rounds when he noticed smoke underneath the truck and stepped out before the vehicle caught fire. At Monday's County Commission meeting, officials questioned whether trash or an electrical problem may be to blame.

Public Works Director Tom Vlach says he doubts it was trash. He says the driver was early in his route, meaning the trash was toward the back of the truck, while the fire mainly consumed the cab.

The cause is crucial because the county can replace the $250,000 truck under warranty if it was an electrical problem, but not if it was caused by trash.
