Topeka, Kan. (WIBW) - Curbside recycling is one step closer to coming true.
Shawnee County Commissioners voted unanimously Monday morning to purchase 45,000 recycling bins. The total cost for the bins is just over $2 million from Rehrig Pacific Company.
The Desoto, Kan. company was lowest out of the three bids the county received for the specific type of bin.
The purchase will be made with money that has been accumulating in a special fund set up by the Solid Waste Department for this purpose.
All refuse customers will see their rates increase by $4 a month to help cover the cost of the recycling which is set to begin next year. All customers will be able to participate in the program but they can opt out of the program by informing the solid waste department if they don't want to participate.
