Release From Richard Harmon

Topeka City Councilmember Richard Harmon, who has represented District 9 since April 2005, filed papers today with City Clerk to seek re-election. Harmon was first elected to the city council in April 2005, and was re-elected in April 2009.

Harmon said, “It has been an honor to represent the Topeka citizens in District 9. I truly enjoy public service, and it would be humbling to have the opportunity to represent the citizens again as their Council member. I am proud of the accomplishments we have made in the last eight years—but there is still much to be done to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of local government.” Harmon said he will continue to work to ensure the completion of fire station 13 in District 9, improve city services such as streets and public safety, emphasize transparency and
accountability, and create an economic environment to attract high paying jobs to Topeka.

Harmon is a member of the city council’s Public Health and Safety Committee, and was elected to serve as Deputy Mayor in 2009.

Harmon is a native Topekan and attended Topeka public schools, Washburn University, Washburn University School of Law and the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law. Harmon is an attorney in private practice in Topeka, and was an adjunct professor at the Washburn School of Law in 2012. Harmon has served on the Board of Directors of numerous organizations including the Washburn
Alumni Association, Topeka South Rotary and Brewster Place Foundation. He is a 2002 graduate of Leadership Greater Topeka, and a 2009 graduate of Leadership Kansas.
