TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Downtown businesses will pay a higher fee for services.
Topeka City Council members voted Tuesday night to approve the increase. Tenants in Topeka's Downtown Business Improvement District pay the city a fee for services including maintenance, trash cleaning and marketing.
The ordinance approved Tuesday establishes a $60 annual fee for previously-exempt businesses smaller than 1,000 square feet. Larger businesses also see a hike, with the maximum annual assessment raised from $12,000 to $13,000.
Also Tuesday, City Manager Jim Colson announced City Attorney David Starkey is retiring. The move is effective April 2.
Starkey has served as city attorney since November 2011.
