Copper Thieves Hit Substation; 3200 In Dark

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A copper theft is to blame for power outages that will leave some people in downtown and central Topeka in the dark until Thursday morning.

Westar Energy says thieves hit a substation at 12th and Clay sometime between 1:30 pm and 6:30 pm Wednesday. Topeka Police say Westar puts the losses at $300,000 between damage done and what was taken. Westar says it would have taken at least two people to do such a job.

The resulting outage affected some 3200 customers. The outage had traffic signals malfunctioning as far west as 12th and Washburn. Topeka Police officers were directing traffic at some of the busier intersections. Members of the Volunteers in Policing Program and the Topeka Police Reserve Program assisted with traffic control so uniform officers could respond to calls for service. Capital Police also assisted.

Westar says power won't be fully restored until Thursday morning.

Topeka Police ask anyone with information about the incident to call Crime Stoppers at 785-234-0007.
