May 2, 2012 – Topeka, KS – A building slated to be the new future service center for Sheltered Living, Inc. was hit by thieves during this past weekend of April 28th and 29th. The rooftop air conditioning unit was completely stripped of all materials. Estimated damages are still pending.

The building located at 3401 SW Harrison was purchased by Sheltered Living, Inc. in the fall of 2010. While Sheltered Living, Inc. does not utilize the building currently, some of the space is occupied by tenants.
The 501 c 3 has quietly begun a campaign to raise the necessary funds to renovate the existing structure to be the new service center for the organization.

Lisa Jackson, President/CEO said, “This incident has not deterred our goal to move the organization into this location. We are proud to be moving into a revitalization zone within the city. We hope that other businesses and organizations will join us in this area. We just heard about one building that was purchased in this area due to our plans to relocate here.”

“When we were evaluating the options between constructing a new building versus renovating, renovating an existing structure in Topeka was by far the most cost efficient option available,” continued Jackson.

Sheltered Living, Inc. supports the efforts of over 260 children and adults with intellectual disabilities to achieve independence and actively participate in the community. Supports and services include a community living program, an independent living program, targeted case management, and an adult life skills program.
