(WIBW) - A convicted child killer has been denied parole.
52-year-old John William is serving a life sentence for the July 1988 killing and mutilation of a nine-year-old Lawrence boy.
Kansas Department of Corrections spokesperson Jeremy Barclay says William was eligible for release this year and met with the state Prisoner Review Board earlier this month.
The board rejected William's bid for parole. Barclay says they cited the violence of the crime and objections from the victim's family and other groups. They also say William has not taken responsibility for the crime.
The board won't hear William's request for release again until 2021. Barclay says that's longer than the normal three to five year wait, but the board expressed specific concerns about William's lack of planning for his release.
