FORT RILEY, Kan. (WIBW) - Fort Riley is inching closer to the completion of a new middle school building.
The new facility is a 176,077 square foot building with 64 classrooms with an 800 student capacity for 6th - 8th grade students.
The nearly $40 million project will feature an 800 seat auditorium, 859 seat main gym, 233 seat auxiliary gym, an orchestra room, as well as a fitness room that also serves as a tornado safe facility.
"On this school what we really tried to do is integrate a lot of day lighting in the school," said Troy Herdel of Schaefer, Johnson, Cox, Frey Architecture. "By doing that of course we have great views overlooking the hill there, kind of a mountain I guess or sort of a hill. So that was one of the things that we really enjoyed doing and I think it’s going to be very successful when we’re finished."
The existing school will be demolished short after the end of the school year in order to complete the new football field, track, and parking lot.
Work began in December of 2012. Crews say they are on pace to be completed by the next school year.
