TOPEKA, Kan(WIBW)--Neighbors joined forces to take an active role in fighting crime Saturday night.
National Night Out Against Crime events took place all across the country -- and all across northeast kansas.
Jim Schmelzle has lived in the Valley Park neighborhood for 21 years--15 years ago his house was broken into and a gun was stolen from his home.
That is why Schmelzle has helped organize National Night Out events in Valley Park for six years.
Valley Park is one of 47 communities that have organized National Night Out events.
Neighbors from across the capital city came together to eat, play and most importantly get to know one another.
Safe Streets, with the help of local law enforcement, has been putting the event together for 12 years and organizers say they've seen it grow with time.
Parents say that its reassuring to know extra eyes will be on their kids --to make sure they are safe.
