Commissioners Approve Home Health Service Move To Hillcrest

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A new health service will soon call a Topeka community center home.

Shawnee County Commissioners unanimously approved a contract Monday for the Douglas County Visiting Nurses Association to lease space at Hillcrest Community Center.

The Shawnee County Health Agency previously operated a clinic out of Hillcrest. It closed when their new building opened at SE 21st and California.

The Visiting Nurses Association offers skilled nursing, physical therapy and other services in the home environment. Topeka site manager Janet Cairns told commissioners Monday that they are Medicare and Medicaid approved and also accept private insurance and workers comp. However, she says, their mission is to never deny services based on inability to pay. Fees are offered on a sliding scale.

Shawnee County Health Agency officials say they do not offer the same level of services as the Visiting Nurses Association. They see it as a positive addition so they could use it as a resource for their clients.

The group has operated in Topeka since last August. It is the only branch location aside from their home base in Lawrence.

They'll pay the county $13, 596 a year for the Hillcrest location. The lease is for three years.
