TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Several church bells caught the attention of passers-by in downtown Topeka, even though they haven't been ringing in two years.
That was in fact the reason First Presbyterian Church at 817 SW Harrison retired its three bells - after 44 years, as part of a complete restoration of its bell tower.
The massive bells are made of brass and brought over from Holland in 1968. It was a gift of the Baldry Family, a member of the congregation, Pastor Brad Walker said.
With the frame, the bells weigh 4,000 pounds.
Church leaders say they're just too costly to repair and Pastor Walker said it's a bittersweet moment to see them lifted off the tower to be placed in storage for the time being.
The new bell tower will remain without bells.
