(KAKE/KWCH) - A teenager is in custody for an overnight house fire in Hutchinson that killed his mother and sister.
KWCH-TV reported Thursday night that prosecutors said Sam Vonachen, 14, was taken into custody for aggravated arson and the murders of his 11-year-old sister Audrey and his mother Karla.
An accelerant was poured around several rooms on the first floor of the house and ignited, according to a news release sent out by Reno County District Attorney Keith Schroeder.
The fire broke out shortly after midnight near the intersection of 19th and Main, southwest of the state fairgrounds. A passerby saw the fire and called 911.
The child died in the fire. Her mother was taken to a Wichita hospital, where she died Thursday afternoon.
The investigation involves the Hutchinson Fire Department, Kansas State Fire Marshal's Office and the Reno County district attorney.
