Police Shoot Armed Suspect

TOPEKA, Kansas - Topeka Police say a police officer shot an armed man who was running from them early Wednesday morning.

Around 12:30 a.m., police were led on a chase in the 2800 Block of SE Colorado Avenue in Topeka. The chase ended a few blocks away on SE Michigan Ave. when the two men in the car bailed outside a home at 2728 SE Michigan Ave.

Police say the men were armed, but won't say at this time whether they took aim and/or fired at the officers.

Police fired at least one shot, hitting one of the men. He was taken to the hospital. Police say when he was loaded into the ambulance, the man's injuries were assumed to be life-threatening. The other suspect was taken into custody. Police Chief Ron Miller said both officers involved are uninjured.

Shawnee County District Attorney Chad Taylor was at the scene. He said he knew his office would have some involvement in investigating the incident, so he looked around the scene.

Chief Miller also visited the scene to get an idea of what happened and see the crime scene in person.

"It's been [...] over 3 years since we've had an incident involving any on-duty personnel," Miller said. "And almost three years since there's been any TPD officers involved in any situation of this nature. But we've asked the Sheriff's Office to conduct the investigation so we have an outside agency conducting the initial investigation."

Chief Miller said after the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office concludes its investigation and the district attorney reviews the situation, the police department will conduct an administrative investigation.

Both officers involved are on administrative leave at this time.
