TOPEKA, Kansas (WIBW) -- A Friday night crash left one person dead after the car became airborne.
Shawnee County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a one-vehicle accident in the 900 block of SE 97th street around 8:30 p.m.
They said a 1986 Oldsmobile was traveling west on 97th and failed to navigate the turn, leaving the roadway on the north side of the road. The vehicle went airborne and hit the railroad embankment. It came to rest just before the railroad tracks.
The male driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
The female passenger was extricated from the car by rescue crews and transported by AMR with non-life threatening injuries to a local hospital.
Neither of the people were wearing seat belts. Authorities say speed was a factor.
