TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Staying out of the scorching sun is a good idea to avoid the dangers from excessive heat, but a good number of people are choosing to stay outside all day for the holiday week.
Kids and adults relaxing by Lake Shawnee say if you can't deal with the heat, you're probably doing it wrong.
The campgrounds by Lake Shawnee are filled to capacity this July Fourth holiday - many came to see the fireworks and Spirit of Kansas shows tomorrow.
Campers say it can get pretty hot in the tents, but they keep hydrated with lots of water.
They have some tricks for staying cool: "Just go under water," six-year-old Isabella advised.
"I go under water and do flips, handstands," eight-year-old Erin said.
If all else fails, "Pray for rain," camper Ed Hawks laughs.
