Camp Makes History Learning Fun For Kids

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Shawnee County Historical Society is hosting Saturday sessions of History Camp for Kids over the summer.

Children ages 8 to 12 are invited to learn about Kansas History in Topeka's own historical back yard. They'll meet from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on the Saturday(s) of their choice. Each Saturday is $5. Kids are asked to bring a sack lunch.

Camp is located at Cox Communications Heritage Educational Center at the Historic John and Mary Jane Ritchie House, 1116 and 1118 SE Madison.

SATURDAY SESSIONS

June 23 - "If Walls Could Talk" Investigate the John Ritchie House as an artifact itself! Discover what stories the house has to tell us. Examine artifacts that were uncovered at the historical dig at the Ritchie House during its restoration.

July 14 - "Dear Diary..." Reenact territorial Kansas days as you learn of stories in the diary of early settler, Samuel Reader. Learn military marching drills with our "sergeant" as Samuel Reader experienced. Discover stories of our early day heroes of Topeka and make a diary of your own.

July 21 - "Making Time for Fun" Come learn about community celebrations and children's toys that were enjoyed by our ancestors during the 1800's. Examine antique toys from the past and try your hand at making some of these toys of your own.

July 28 - "Right Under Their Noses!" Discover the Underground Railroad in the Topeka and Missouri areas. See the actual house where John and Mary Jane Ritchie helped escaping slaves. Reenact the true story of Reverend Lewis Bodwell as he led a family of escaped slaves to freedom. Come travel back in time as "Mary Jane Ritchie" invites you to join her in her Underground Railroad activities. Shhh...

August 4 - "My Kansas Home" Investigate the building materials of the homes of our first settlers in Topeka. Find out how to make a log cabin, sod, frame and stone house. Come inside the John Ritchie house and see how Mr. and Mrs. Ritchie made their 1856 stone house.
