TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - People and organizations who go for the gold for the Topeka community earned special recognition Monday.
The Community Resources Council used an Olympic theme for its third-annual awards of excellence. The awards honor those who work to address community needs.
The Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library was named the outstanding government agency; Robuck Jewelers got the nod for business of excellence; the Boys and Girls Club of Topeka was the outstanding nonprofit; and Connie Sanchez of the YMCA Safe Visit program was named individual of excellence.
Sanchez also earned the inaugural Healthy Community Champion Award. Amerigroup was the presenting sponsor for the award, which includes a $5,000 gift.
Sanchez says it's especially gratifying following a year of major funding changes that had them working to keep the doors open. She says the families the agency serves made her believe she had to find a way to make it work, and she's pleased that she and her staff have been able to continue without having to reduce their clientele.
Safe Visit provides a safe environment for parents to exchange or visit with children in relationships involving conflict or abuse.
