TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Details of a brutal beating and burning were exposed from a co-defendant in Shawnee County Court Wednesday (7/25).

Former Topeka convenience store partner Monroe Lockhart was bound over for trial on aggravated felony counts of burglary, intimidation, battery and assault with a deadly weapon, stemming from a break in and beating last November.

Co-defendant Jacob Barnett took the stand against Lockhart Wednesday morning. Barnett pleaded guilty to all charges, he hoped, for a reduced sentence in exchange for his testimony. Barnett was sentenced Wednesday afternoon to three years, eight months in prison, and he must register as a violent offender on release.

Before his sentencing, Barnett told Judge Mark Braun he devised a plan to rob Mo's Express convenience store in Hudson Crossing, where Lockhart was a managing partner.

Barnett brought Crystal McGuire and Caleb Russel along when he stole cigarettes and a laptop computer, which he says he traded for drugs.

Barnett says he blamed McGuire and Russel for the theft, and he, Lockhart, and Anthony Talbert went to McGuire and Russel's trailer to confront them.

Barnett proceeded to brutally beat McGuire, and burn her with a hot knife. He said he did it because Lockhart had a gun, and demanded that Barnett prove to him he wasn't involved.

Charges against Anthony Talbert were dropped.

The developer of the convenience store property, Corey Brown, was found dead in January. No one has been charged in his death.
