TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- A city watchdog is suing three people for defamation, including Topeka's mayor.
Joe Ledbetter's attorney, Lucas Thompson, confirms two of the lawsuits are against Mayor Bill Bunten and former Shawnee County Commissioner, now municipal Court Judge Vic Miller.
Ledbetter's petition says Bunten and Miller both stated in separate public meetings that Ledbetter failed the bar exam three times, when he only failed it once, by a point and a half.
Ledbetter is seeking damages in excess of $75,000 dollars for invasion of privacy, outrageous conduct and defamation.
In a response filed with the court Bunten denies the allegation. The response further states Ledbetter needed to first file a claim against the city and that his regular interjection at public meetings makes him a public figure, therefore immune from defamation.
Thompson says the third planned defendant isn't yet named because they haven't yet responded to the claims.
