BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – The 1st Infantry Division’s headquarters battalion assumed its mission in eastern Afghanistan April 12 in a ceremony on Bagram Airfield.

The battalion, now dubbed Task Force Defender, took charge of operations in the Parwan province from the 1st Cavalry Division’s headquarters battalion.

Task Force Defender will conduct several missions in Parwan, ranging from support to security. The unit is scheduled to complete a year-long tour here.

“I am looking forward to the positive and lasting impact Task Force Defender will have on Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom,” said Task Force Commander Lt. Col. James Davis. “Continued partnership is the key to transition; shoulder to shoulder we will stand.”

Brig. Gen. James Richardson, the Deputy Commanding General for Support in Regional Command-East, also spoke at the ceremony.

“The task force will see a changing Afghanistan, one with Afghans in the lead of security, governance and development,” he said.

“You are faced with a tough mission, but that is why a “Duty First” unit was chosen to do the heavy lifting,” said Richardson, referring to the unit’s motto. “I have every confidence that you will not only get job done here, but that you will excel.”

Task Force Defender Soldiers will also serve as members of the Regional Command-East staff, which provides command and control to all of eastern Afghanistan. The 1st Infantry Division is set to assume that responsibility in another transfer of authority ceremony this month.
