FORT RILEY, Kan. (WIBW) -- Fort Riley is celebrating the homecoming of thousands of Big Red One soldiers after what commanding officers are calling a challenging and "historic" mission to Iraq and Afghanistan.
The 1st Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division uncased its colors on Custer Hill Wednesday afternoon, a ceremony marking the soldiers' official return to Fort Riley.
The brigade, comprised of 3,500 troops, was one of the first units to deploy in support of Operation New Dawn and advised, trained and assisted Iraqi security units in northern Iraq during a year-long deployment.
The brigade still has three battalions supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan that will return at a later date as well as a battalion in northern Iraq.
