TOPEKA (WIBW) -- 11-year old Billy Chandler is just beginning his battle against a mildly aggressive form of leukemia, but already, friends and family are stepping up to take action to help Billy.
They'll be holding a Band Jam and Halloween Costume Party this Sunday afternoon, from 2:00 till 6:00 in the American Legion Post 400 Building in Topeka.
Billy was just diagnosed in September with ALL Leukemia. Billy was in the hospital where he had two surgeries, bone marrow extraction, a port put into his chest and chemo put into his spinal cord. Billy was again in the hospital for a third bone marrow extraction. Billy has hardly ever been sick a day in his life but will now go through chemo for the next 3 ½ years and his fans are hoping he will beat this!
Billy loves art and draws all the time. He loves animals and especially loves riddles and telling jokes. He was also very active on his summer baseball team, playing with his cousins. His brothers are 13, 10 and 5 and he has an older step-sister that’s 17. Not only is he too tired to be able to participate in any of the sports he loves to do (and pretty much everything else), his illness now keeps him from attending school because his immune system is too low.
BorderLine Band is going to host the jam session/ benefit Sunday for Billy, who is a student at Logan Elementary. The benefit is to help cover the costs associated with getting Billy to and from the hospital, doctors, treatments, therapy, etc. Specifically, the family has one car so they’re hoping to find a reliable used vehicle so his mom is better able to get him to and from his appointments.
The event Sunday will be a Halloween Costume Party, with a Monster Hunt for all kids that come in costume. There is a Donation entry fee of $5.00 for adults and all children under 12 years old are free. Bands will use 45 minutes of donated time to play, other people may sit in on the Jam and everyone can dance or just sit and enjoy the music. There's also a Silent Auction with many items in order to bring in more funds for the family. All proceeds will go to Billy’s Family.
There will be hot dogs, chips, popcorn, a silent auction, a “monster-egg” hunt (it’s not Easter time so they’re improvising), and other things, so it'll be a kid-friendly event.
