TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Shawnee County Sheriff Richard Barta says that he won't run for re-election because at 65, there are other things he would like to do.

A year ago, he thought of someone that would make an excellent Shawnee County Sheriff down the road -- Herman Jones.

Since then, Barta has been "grooming" Jones for the position and hopes he is elected the next Sheriff.

Out of many different memories as sheriff, Barta says he will miss his co-workers the most.

"The folks I get to work with everyday have made my time here a joy," Barta said. "Certainly we've had challenges but we've worked together through those. And I think because of that hopefully it is a better sheriff's office now that it was 12 years ago."

Barta says the most difficult tasks for a new sheriff include the budget, recruiting good workers, and maintaining current partnerships with law enforcement officials
