TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Balloons soared to the sky Tuesday, in honor of those affected by substance use disorders.
Topeka's Valeo Recovery Center held the event to mark the 23rd observance of National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month.
Organizes say Recovery Month promotes the message recovery is possible. It also encourages all citizens to take action to help expand and improve the availability of prevention and treatment.
"We want to spread the message that recovery works for addiction and it's available for everyone and millions have embraced recovery and were hoping to get many many more to do so," said Kirk Schottler, senior addiction counselor at Valeo.
More than 22 million people in the U.S. have substance use disorders.
