Authorities Investigate Possible Connections Between St. Marys Arsons

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Investigators are looking for links between two arson fires in Saint Marys.

Pottawatomie County Fire Chief Bruce Brazzle says they may never know exactly what started Friday's massive blaze at a partially-demolished grain elevator due to the tremendous heat and destruction, but witnesses say it started outside the building, in the rubble pile.

Brazzle says investigators identified a person of interest in a Sunday house fire two blocks away. He says the fire had several points of origin, but damage was minimal because some of them didn't take off.

The house was undergoing renovations.

Brazzle says the price tag from the grain elevator will be well over $1 million, with damage to nearby businesses and equipment at the scene.

Brazzle says a second possible person of interest mentioned earlier in the week was determined not to be related to the fires.

The State Fire Marshal's Office is assisting with the investigation into the house fire.
