CLAY CENTER, Kan. (WIBW) -- Dentists from across the country are pitching in to help an area dentist office provide free dental work to the public. The charitable event has served hundreds of people throughout the region.

The staff at Clay Center Family Dental Care is reaching out the community in a big way this Friday, April 19th- helping those less fortunate.

After years of doing volunteer work in Belize, Dr. Rick Hammel decided he wanted to also serve folks in need here at home.

"I do this because of my Christian beliefs. It feeds my soul... I didn’t realize how important it was for people to have dental care really until I went to Belize. I had patients down there that missed sleep night after night because of dental pain and it opened my eyes to what goes on in other economic levels besides my own," said Dr. Rick Hammel.

"Unfortunately, dental care is expensive for people and it’s becoming more expensive so this is a way to take a day out of our time and give back to those people who can’t afford regular dental care," added Dr. Dustin Kruse.

Kruse has volunteered at the Kansas Mission of Mercy which provides similar dental services to people throughout the state. Years ago, he saw firsthand the need for dentistry when he visited the Kansas Mission of Mercy during his undergraduate studies at Kansas State University, inspiring him to become a dentist.

He expects Clay Center Family Dental Care to serve 100-150 people Friday.

The Clay Center Dental Mission is now in its fourth year. Six dentists from all over the U.S. and 30 volunteers are joining Hammel and Kruse’s team to help the underprivileged and the uninsured.

"I think it’s a wonderful thing to do. I know there are a lot of people who can’t afford dental care and I think it’s important to give back to those who are less fortunate," said dental hygienist.Alicia Spitler.

This is a first-come, first-serve event and tickets are required and are available beginning as early as 5:30 am on the day of the event at Clay Center Family Dental Care at 714 Liberty in Clay Center, KS.

Services being offered are exams, x-rays, cleanings, fillings and extractions for those 18 years of age and older. Primarily, the mission will focus on relieving pain and fixing simple dental problems.
