TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Protestors gathered to take a stand...in a very different way today.
Representatives of the national animal rights organization Mercy For Animals stood beside a giant inflatable puppy crammed inside a hamburger bun.
Their goal was to spark debate over why we eat some animals, but call others our pets.
Protestors held signs with puppies and pigs reading "why love one but eat the other?" to show that all animals should be treated the same.
"The only difference between the animals we call meals and the animals we call pets is our treatment of them," said Phil Letten, national campaign coordinator for Mercy For Animals. "All animals suffer pain and experience pleasure in the same way and are deserving of the same consideration and respect."
Letten says the most powerful action to show support is to choose to be a vegetarian.
