TOPEKA, Kan (WIBW)--Meet Katie--she's a 13-year old English setter, whose owner passed away, leaving her without a home.

Dr. Mike Esau says Katie is just one of many homeless animals in Topeka.That's something he's working to change, with the help from homes like Laura Hinerman. Hinerman takes the rest of her animals to see Dr. Esau, and she met Katie at the vet's office. She decided to give Katie a nice, safe place to live.

Esau says he and his staff often take in stray or displaced pets that his clients have found. Fay Peters even makes homemade necklaces and sells candy to pay for the dogs and cats' boarding and vaccines.

However, Companion Animal Clinic isn't equipped to take on all the stray pets in the area. Esau works together with groups like SCARS and Saving Death Row Dogs, finding lost animals new homes.

Dr. Esau provides medical for the animals groups, like Saving Deathrow Dogs, take care of.

In return--animal advocate groups in Topeka use their connections to find Dr. Esau's strays new homes, setting up adoption booths.

The groups and Dr. Esau hope to give these pets a second chance--like the one that saved Katie.
