TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A Topeka man says he has a city councilman to thank for saving his life.

Councilman John Alcala was honored Wednesday with the Champion of Character Award at Safe Streets' monthly meeting.

Glen Pruitt and his wife, Dawn, were on hand for the presentation. In early April, Pruitt was working on his car when it fell onto his chest. His wife started screaming for help and Alcala, who was across the street at his mother's house, ran over, unlocked the jack and freed Pruitt.

Alcala says he's no hero and says he's a bit embarrassed by the attention. He said Pruitt has been his mother's neighbor for many years and has always been a sort of "overseer" for the neighborhood, so Alcala was just glad he could help Pruitt out.

Pruitt disagrees, saying Alcala is a hero and deserving of the honor. He says Alacal put himself aside to come to his aide. He says he's grateful his wife was nearby to get Alcala's attention and that Alcala came to his aide.

Pruitt suffered cracked ribs and a partially collapsed lung. He's still a little sore, but is otherwise all right.
