TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Power remained out and a major intersection was shut down Tuesday night, all due to a rollover accident.
The wreck happened just before 2 pm Tuesday in the 3200 block of S. Kansas Ave. Officials say the driver was traveling north on S. Kansas Ave. when he tried to go around another vehicle. He ended up hitting a curb, rolled, and crashed into a power pole and gas main. After hitting the gas main, the car burst into flames.
The driver, identified as 33-year-old Cody Lavin of Topeka, got himself out of the car. He suffered non-life threatening injuries. Police say he was booked into jail Tuesday evening for a parole violation.
Westar Energy reports around 100 customers remained without power still as of 10:30 pm Tuesday. Repair crews were on site, but it was not known how much longer it would take to get the power back on.
In addition, the accident led to a water line break. City officials said, because of it, they would essentially close the intersection of 29th and S. Kansas Ave. The only traffic allowed would be westbound turning right to go north on Kansas Ave.
Also, S. Kansas is closed between 29th and 37th. Only local traffic is allowed. It's not known how long the the repairs would take. That area of South Topeka already has several construction closures.
