AT&T Adding Muscle Behind Text And Drive Campaign

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -The dangers of texting while driving are obvious, yet countless teen and adult drivers still use their phones to communicate while behind the wheel.

In an email from AT&T company spokesman Chris Lester, AT&T has learned that 75% of teens surveyed say texting while driving is normal among friends.

AT&T is hoping that a new campaign called "It Can Wait," will lead consumers to make texting while driving socially unacceptable.

The campaign begins before your first phone call. With large removable stickers reminding the consumer that "texting can wait." Phone packaging also includes other large stickers and information to educate buyers of the dangers of distracted driving.

A young driver himself, Michael Williams says, "It's important to me because I drive and there's other people on the street and I wouldn't want to get in an accident because of them.

Dana Bassett, an experienced driver says, "You see the commercials and it really makes you think of when people lose loved ones over a text, I think its a great idea."

Technology has simplified communication so much so that we feel we can use it while operating a vehicle. Even though it causes over 100,000 accidents a year, we still feel we can text and drive.

Young driver Danielle Sipe understands how difficult it can be for teen drivers, "I can't say that i don't do it but it does make you feel like you need to watch what you are doing and pay attention."

It doesn't just begin and end with teens though. The survey revealed that 77% of teens have seen their parents text and drive. AT&T reps also say that texting drivers are twenty three times more likely to get into an accident.

The "It Can Wait Campaign," will be taking pledges to stop texting and driving beginning September 19th on their website
