TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Topeka crime statistics showed an overall reduction in crime but an increase in violent crimes. (VIDEO INCLUDED)
Now law enforcement and crime prevention officials are forming a new strategy, and they need your help.
To make our capital city the safest in America, law enforcement and Safe Streets Officials stacked their playbook with slogans that worked last year, like "Lock it, Remove it or Lose it." That slogan that could be credited with reducing theft crimes by more than 400 cases from 2008 to 2009.
They're also developing new campaigns to reduce Topeka's problem areas. Those include robberies on individuals, aggravated assault and battery, and home burglaries.
Officials say Topekans can do a lot to protect themselves, starting with protecting their homes.
They say make sure your property is visible, mow your yard, trim your bushes and trees and make sure your valuables are not in plain sight.
Also, mark your valuables with an invisible ink pen available for $2 at the Safe Streets office. That way if anything gets stolen, police can identify it and return it to you.
Safe Streets is also tackling underage drinking this year and working to provide more rehabilitation to inmates to break the cycle of crime.
