Detained Americans Thought They Met With Haitian Police

The women went before a judge yesterday and today the 5 men in the Baptist missionary group, including Topeka’s Drew Culberth, pleaded their case.

The group is claiming they met with people they thought were Haitian and Dominican authorities a week before being stopped at the border.

Officials say a Haitian minister went door-to-door gathering kids for the Americans to take, and twenty of the 33 children have living families.

Haitian officials have imposed stricter controls on adoptions since the quake. Now the Prime Minister of Haiti must personally authorize the departure of any child.

Culberth's family and church members are still waiting for his safe return. This Sunday, Culberth's church will talk about the similarities between his situation in Haiti and the biblical story of Paul and Silas.
