The Senior Consumer Advisory Council's goal is to research and recommend new ways to protect seniors from scams.

Kansas Attorney General Steve Six says the members have had special experiences with seniors that make them highly qualified.

“I’m confident this group the talent we’ve assembled will come up with innovative ways to help protect older consumers from becoming victims of consumer frauds and scams," Six said.

Heading the group is former Kansas Attorney General Bob Stephan.

He says Six wants to make certain that Kansas seniors get knowledge on what to watch out for because scams are everywhere.

“I don’t even know why I’m working anymore because I’m going to get a million and a half dollars from Nigeria… It goes on and on and believe it or not people contact these folks and they get taken," Stephan said.

The group has started brainstorming already. At their first meeting members talked about warning seniors to watch out for 2010 census scammers.

Census officials say real census workers won't start going door-to-door until March. When they do, they'll show you a white badge and a confidentiality statement.

Six says the group will enhance the services his office already offers.

"It's really the ones you remember and the ones that are the most satisfying when you help out a Kansas senior," Six said.
