TOPEKA, Kansas (WIBW) -- Before digging into the next outdoor project at home, utility companies say to call 811 first.
Utilities companies nationwide are recognizing Sunday, August 11 as "811 Day," a message to those who may want to dig outside for various projects to call the company before getting the shovel out.
Call the number 811 before digging so the utility company can locate buried lines, such as gas lines, so they can be avoided. The company will mark the area with flags and spray, which prevents danger to the digger and to the property. A nick, gash or cut to a gas line could pose serious risks to those standing nearby.
Building a deck, installing an underground pool, putting in a mailbox and laying a patio are all examples of instances where 811 should be called before starting anything.
