LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) _ Kansas will get a new poet laureate this week.

The current holder of that position, Denise Low, ends her two-year term Wednesday. She'll be replaced by Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg.

Both women live in Lawrence and are longtime friends.

Mirriam-Goldberg says she hopes to continue Low's efforts to promote poetry throughout the state.

The poet laureate program is is administered by the Kansas Arts Commission. It began in 2004 at the request of former Gov. Kathleen
Sebelius.

Mirriam-Goldberg plans poetry workshops, ongoing poetry circles and a four-minute weekly poetry show on High Plains Public Radio, which serves much of the western half of the state.
