PETA Billboard Plans Stifled

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is dropping its bid to put up two billboards in Wichita urging people to become vegetarians.

The proposal came in the wake of the shooting death of Dr. George Tiller.

All three billboard companies in Wichita rejected the effort, saying the timing wasn't appropriate.

Tiller, whose clinic was one of a few in the country that performed third-trimester abortions, was gunned down at his church on May 31.

One of PETA's proposed billboards would have said "ProChoice? Choose Vegetarian,'' and the other would have said "ProLife? Go
Vegetarian.''

A PETA spokeswoman said the group is disappointed by the decisions, but is happy that it prompted a conversation about being a vegetarian.
