NEWTON, Kan. (AP) _ A set of Prussian Mennonite church records going back to the 16th century that have been kept in Kansas are returning to Germany after more than 60 years.

The Wichita Eagle reported on its Web site Tuesday that Bethel College in Newton will return the four books, among the oldest Mennonite-related volumes known to exist, later this year. The books contain the congregational records of the Danzig Mennonite Church in what is now Gdansk, Poland.

Church members fled with the books at the end of World War II, ahead of the advancing Soviet army. Relief workers brought them to Kansas. The books include births, deaths, marriages and other records between 1598 and 1943.
