TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Fresh from a visit to Guantanamo Bay, Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback is back in Washington to stop a Pentagon request for funding to move detainee operations to the United States.
At issue is a Pentagon request for $80 million to build any new facilities needed to transfer detainees at Guantanamo.
No decision has been made on moving detainees to the U.S., but President Barack Obama plans to close the prison next year.
Fort Leavenworth in northeast Kansas has been mentioned among potential sites for detainees. Brownback, a Republicans, and others in the Kansas congressional delegation oppose any such move.
They argue it would damage the Army's mission in Kansas and put residents at needless risk.
