WASHINGTON (AP) _ Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback is heading to Guantanamo Bay to review detainee operations at the U.S. base in Cuba.

Brownback is among the most ardent opponents of bringing the detainees to the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, the military's only maximum security prison. The Kansas Republican and other members of Congress will visit Guantanamo on Friday.

President Barack Obama signed an executive order directing the Pentagon to close Guantanamo, where some 240 detainees are being held.

Brownback has written Obama and introduced legislation to block any move of detainees to Kansas, saying it would put residents at a security risk and would be counter to Fort Leavenworth's primary mission of educating Army officers.
