The department announced Thursday that Assistant U.S. Attorney Lanny Welch will take over the top federal prosecutor's job in the state until a permanent replacement is named by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
Welch, 47, joined the U.S. attorney's office in 1989. He has served as criminal chief and deputy branch manager of the agency's Wichita office. Welch is a former assistant county attorney in Barton County and a 1987 graduate of Washburn University School of Law.
Former U.S. Attorney Eric Melgren resigned in October 2008 to become the newest federal district judge in Kansas.
