Fort Riley to Host Pandemic Influenza Tabletop Exercise

FORT RILEY, Kan. – About 80 representatives from state, federal and local agencies will travel to Fort Riley May 6 to participate in a planned pandemic influenza tabletop exercise.

The annual exercise will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Riley’s Conference Center on Main Post.

The scenario, which Fort Riley officials began writing in September 2008, is designed around a pandemic influenza outbreak introduced on the installation by one individual.

“The purpose of this exercise is to enhance communications between Fort Riley and our federal, state and Central Flint Hills community partners concerning our joint response to a pandemic influenza outbreak,” said Scott Starns, Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and High-yield Explosives Operations Specialist for the Emergency Management Branch of the Fort Riley Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security.

Representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Red Cross, Kansas Army National Guard and Unified School District 475, as well as emergency managers from the seven surrounding counties of the Central Flint Hills Region will be in attendance.

The joint exercise affords area agencies the opportunity to share information which will better protect their communities, said Melody Saxton, public health preparedness planner for the Junction City-Geary County Health Department.

“Because we are at the door step of Fort Riley, it is critical we work together as a team in any emergency,” Saxton said. “We are sharing our surveillance information with Fort Riley and they are sharing their information with us, so this collaboration protects everyone.”
