LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) _ Bob and Elizabeth Dole told a crowd in Lawrence that America needs more politicians and public servants with the passion of Jack Kemp.

Speaking at a University of Kansas lecture today, the Doles commented on the passing of their friend and Bob Dole's 1996 running-mate in the for the White House.

Kemp died of cancer yesterday at age 73.

Bob Dole says Kemp ``was one of those Republicans who wanted to make the party bigger for the right reasons.''

Mixing stories from their long and distinguished political careers, the Doles also shared their humor and insight to their special relationship that dates to the 1970s.

Also, Dole said he spoke with Sen. Arlen Specter after his decision last week to switch from Republican to Democrat.

Dole said Specter would continue his independent spirit, causing Democrats as many fits as he did Republicans over the years.
