Smoking in public places is no longer permitted in Salina.
A smoking ordinance was approved by the Salina city commission and went into affect Saturday.
The ordinance promotes public health by prohibiting smoking in public places and places of employment.
The ban goes far beyond Salina's former ordinance which prohibited smoking in restaurants during certain hours of the day.
Violations by persons are considered a misdemeanor with a $50 fine for the first violation $100 for the second and $200 for the third.
Businesses in violation could lose their license or permit.
