Pedestrian Hit by Truck Identified

Topeka Police say Jerry D. Schweizer, 52, of Topeka, was the person hit by a pickup at 2:04 a.m. Friday. The driver of the truck, Lindsay Constant, 25, of Berryton, was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

TOPEKA, Kan. - On Friday, April 24, 2009 at 2:04 a.m. Topeka Police Officers responded to 10th & Watson reference an injury accident involving a 1991 tan Chevrolet 1500 pickup and a pedestrian. The pedestrian has been identified as Jerry D. Schweizer, 52 of Topeka.

Preliminary investigations indicate that a second vehicle, a red Jeep Cherokee was traveling eastbound on 10th St. at Watson when the driver swerved to avoid a pedestrian in the roadway.

Police say the tan, Chevrolet 1500 pickup was following the Jeep Cherokee eastbound on 10th and struck the pedestrian after the Jeep Cherokee swerved missing the pedestrian.

The driver of the tan Chevrolet 1500 pickup, Lindsay Dyan Constant, 25 of Berryton, KS was arrested on suspicion of DUI. Police say she was not injured in the accident.

The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital with conditions that were considered to be life-threatening. Alcohol is a contributing factor to this accident, according to police.

The Accident Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate the crash and asks that anyone who may have witnessed the accident or has information about this accident to call Sgt. Don O’Dell at (785) 368-9487 or Crime Stoppers at 234-0007.
