LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) _ A former University of Kansas student from Turkey is in jail and may be deported after pleading guilty to two counts of animal cruelty.

Cem Basoflas of Istanbul struck a plea agreement with prosecutors in Douglas County District Court Monday. He was charged with severely injuring a cat in August and torturing and killing a dog in February.

Lawrence police in February arrested Basoflas, who was a KU sophomore at the time, after finding a large amount of blood inside his apartment. Humane Society director Midge Grinstead has said the cases are among the worst instances of animal cruelty her staff has seen.

Basoflas will be jailed until his sentencing May 8. The sentence could range from 30 days to one year on each count.

The defense said it will recommend Basoflas be turned over to immigration officials for deportation to Turkey.
