Two Topeka Men Charged In Armed Robbery

Jonathan Matthew Atherton, 23, Topeka, KS, and Nathan Haywood Mercado, 20, Topeka, are each charged with one count aggravated robbery in connection with the gunpoint robbery of Jeffrey Dubree, 18.

TOPEKA, KANSAS – Jonathan Matthew Atherton, 23, Topeka, KS, and Nathan Haywood Mercado, 20, Topeka, are each charged with one count aggravated robbery, a level-3 person felony, according to the Shawnee County District Attorney's Office.

Mercado and Atherton are alleged to have robbed at gunpoint Jeffery Dean Dubree, 18, Topeka.

The alleged incident occurred on the afternoon of April 2, 2009 at the corner of SE 10th and Republican in Topeka. Mercado and Atherton were taken into custody shortly thereafter by the Topeka Police Department.

The Topeka Police Department investigated the incident. Shawnee County Assistant District Attorney Dan Dunbar is the prosecuting attorney.

As in all criminal cases, a person is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. The charging document filed merely contains allegations of criminal conduct.
